A heat pump is a modern heating device that obtains energy for heating not by burning fuel, but by extracting heat from the ambient air and transferring it to the house heating system and for domestic hot water preparation. This technology works on the principle of natural energy exchange: it takes heat from the environment (air, ground, or water) and transfers it inside the building. During the warm season, many of these systems can operate in the opposite direction – effectively cooling the premises like an air conditioner, so a single device ensures a comfortable microclimate in the home all year round.
Air-to-water heat pumps work similarly to a refrigerator, only in reverse – even at sub-zero outdoor temperatures, they are able to extract enough heat to efficiently heat radiators, underfloor heating, or supply hot water for domestic use.
Ground-source (also called geothermal) heat pumps extract heat not from the air, but from the ground heat accumulated in the earth, using underground collectors or vertical boreholes.
Air-to-air heat pumps (often simply called heat pump air conditioners) transfer heat from the outdoor air directly to the indoor air through an indoor unit, without an intermediate water heating system.
